Pool Stabilizer: Why It's Essential
A pool stabilizer, also known as cyanuric acid (CYA), protects chlorine from rapid degradation due to sunlight. Maintaining the right stabilizer level (30–50 ppm) is key: too low and chlorine dissipates quickly, too high (over-stabilization) and chlorine becomes ineffective, possibly leading to algae growth. Regular testing and adjustment help keep the stabilizer at optimal levels. For saltwater pools, stabilizer usage remains important to ensure the chlorine produced is protected from UV rays.
Chlorine Treatment: Shock vs. Regular Maintenance
Chlorine is the most common disinfectant for swimming pools, keeping water safe and clear. Regular maintenance requires chlorine levels between 1 and 3 ppm. However, situations like cloudy or green water, heavy usage, or after storms require a chlorine shock treatment. This involves adding a high dose of non-stabilized chlorine to quickly sanitize and eliminate persistent algae. Ensure filtration runs continuously during shock treatment, returning chlorine levels to normal before swimming again. Regular use of slow-release chlorine tablets or multifunction chlorine helps maintain consistent sanitation.
Algae & Green Pool Water: Prevention and Treatment
Algae blooms can cause green, cloudy water and slippery pool surfaces. Prevent algae by maintaining proper chlorine levels, balanced pH, and adequate daily filtration. Certain algae types, like mustard algae, form stubborn yellowish deposits on pool surfaces. If algae appear, brush surfaces thoroughly and perform a shock treatment with chlorine or active oxygen. Adding a specialized algaecide can help, especially against mustard algae. Continuous filtration after treatment and possibly a clarifier or flocculant will restore water clarity.
Pool pH and Alkalinity: Achieving Balance
he ideal pH level for pool water is between 7.2 and 7.4. Low pH (acidic water) can cause corrosion and irritation, while high pH (basic water) reduces chlorine effectiveness and promotes cloudy water. Regular pH testing is crucial; adjust using pH+ products to increase levels or pH- to decrease levels. Pool alkalinity (Total Alkalinity, or TAC) acts as a buffer stabilizing pH fluctuations. Optimal alkalinity (around 80–120 ppm) prevents rapid pH swings. If TAC is too low, a buffering agent can raise it; if it's too high, gradually lower it by adding pH-.
